My version of contemporary painting with wildlife. I use the name "Contemporary Lodge" based on where these paintings usually reside. Most end up in collectors second homes ("cabins") which often reflect their surroundings natural themes, commonly known as "lodge"look.

Heavy textures and brilliant colors are often the hallmark of this style, detail levels vary considerably with each piece. The essence of creature is central to theme, brush strokes incorporate colors that not only represent the animal's energies but the universe in which it exists.

My formative years as an artist started with an exclusive focus on realism. I rendered paintings with a detail level I wouldn't consider at this point. Maturing perceptions and skill levels find me effectively creating more with less. Moving much more paint with contemporary work has garnered many realizations as to what I believe matters and doesn't, I then execute work accordingly. Now I find realism merging more with impresssionistic and contemporary styles.

Because the wildlife I depict is invariably part of it's environment I've basically been a landscape painter all of my life. Like other subjects these nature scenes are subject to the same style variations and morphs as my other work. A sense of the place is what I most like to convey.

While still in my twenties a serendipitous stop at New York's Guggenheim Museum changed my outlook of what art is, and can do, permanently. Austrian artist Arnulf Rainer's major retrospective of paintings had what critics called a "frenzied attack on the image" and a "giddy gaudy style". I saw agonized expressions with blood red paint careening off them. Although I admired the power of the work, had no desire to duplicate what I felt he had done with such impact. It did however open my mind to the raw emotion of paint flowing freely.

Through ensuing years varied degrees of this newfound artistic license did weave itself into my own work. More radically upon discovery, over time morphing in to what I was already doing at it's own pace. Often seen in my "Contemporary Lodge" pieces emphasizing the motion or soul of subject matter. Below remnants of this inspiration emerge within Contemporary Works.

As a wildlife artist, time afield taking reference photographs has always been a favorite aspect of my vocation. I've been lucky to travel internationally and absorb as much as possible, with the plan to recreate back in the studio. This of course still happens and remains cherished. What is different, is skill level. The shear amount of time doing this has enhanced ability to a substantially higher level. Have gone on to win awards that gave me the confidence to start marketing my images as fine wall art. The response has been very encouraging.

I currently offer these images as open-edition and signed. All with shown frames. They all come in three sizes. These framed outside dimensions are small 16  by 20 inches, medium 25 by 35 inches, and large 36 by 48 inches.  The listed price always includes s/h in the USA.
