This piece has a personal historic impact for me, as it was a pivotal moment in my decision to become a wildlife artist. Family fishing trips into western Ontario's boreal forests were epic to me as a young boy. Growing up in Wisconsin there was a lot for a young nature enthusiast to delve into, but here deer tracks were replaced by moose, lakes dotted with cabins instead had endless conifers, although we always had black bears I had not yet seen one. Walking two miles into a wilderness lake ( with my brother, grandfather and dad) to fish walleye, I was hoping to see a moose. Instead I was thrilled to encounter my first black bear in the wild, as he ran across a granite outcrop of Canadian Shield then stood to rise "Above the Saplings".
